Column
I do not think people understand the meaning of the holidays anymore. I have never read about such crazy and selfish people before. With sales being bigger and better this year for Black Friday, is seems people have gotten crazier too.
It stuns me that at a Wal-Mart not too far from where I live, a young boy, as old as I am, 20-years-old, is going as far as shooting someone and trying to steal items in order to get what he wanted. Also, a woman went as far as pepper spraying other shoppers over an Xbox video game! That is going way beyond what the holidays are supposed to be about, let alone Black Friday!
There is no need to be pushing and shoving to get things that you want. I think that many of the shoppers could shop online and that would prevent a lot of the madness that takes place. The deals online are just as good and you get to shop in the comfort of your home without the mess and lines.
The holidays should be about happy times and not about what you can buy for the cheapest deal. Black Friday is overrated.

How Wired Are You
After taking the 'How Wired Are You' quiz, I found out there is more for me to learn when it comes to computers, the web and media. I scored a 10, which said that I have time to reboot and install lots of new brainware. I feel like I am pretty good when it comes to cell phones, but when it comes to building web sites and editing movies, I am not to good.
In one of my classes that I am taking now, I am blogging regularly and am learning how to create a web site. I think this class will really help me gain knowledge of what to do on computers in a more professional sense and not just roaming the web.

Life Lessons
Gordon Greb joined San Jose State once again, on Wednesday Oct. 5, to relay his message on how we can succeed.
As the founder of broadcast journalism in 1957 at San Jose State, the 90-year-old man has experienced many different types of communication. He has experience as an actor, writer, reporter, editor, producer, news director, news anchor, TV and radio documentary producer, call-in show host, narrator, and station manager.
After going to UC Berkley, University of Minnesota and Stanford, Greb has become a very knowledgeable man. He said to the audience, “Study the Constitution and exercise your rights.” This became useful when he wrote to the U.S. Supreme Court saying they could not censor movies under the First Amendment. Because Greb was so knowledgeable, he won his fight against the Supreme Court.
As a journalist, he knew that we have freedom of speech and he enforced that. He also knew that as a journalist you had to push the limit and ask questions. Asking questions defined a journalist, when it comes to Gordon Greb. He knew that being a journalist meant that people trusted you to inform them. He was good at informing and pushing the limit, which is why he was so great.
Gordon Greb knew to get somewhere, it would not just happen; we needed to fight for it. He fought for the chance to have his own news program at 21-years-old. Greb never had anything fall into his lap. He told us that “[We] are the future [and we must] think as we the people.” We need to be go-getters and grab our goals, just like Gordon Greb did.
As Gordon Greb found success in the broadcasting business, he found success elsewhere. Greb found success as being a father and grandfather. Although he has accomplished many goals regarding broadcast news and has furthered communications, he loves to be with family. His last words as a professor were “Take care of the children and we will be alright.”

Top News #1
The story that I picked that is top news is about Netflix. Netflix decided to split the company into mailing DVD's as one company, Qwikster, and streaming videos as another company, Netflix. By doing this split, it caused many people to cancel their memberships with Netflix because the prices went up, there will be two separate company's which means two separate bills, and it is more complicated.
The company did not do a very good job describing why the charges are more and how it will be good for the consumers. Their communication skills did not satisfy the ones who made Netflix so big and that is why there is controversy and Netflix's number are falling dramatically.
What makes it newsworthy?
This story does have an impact. It will impact every person who is a member of Netflix because there will be an increase in price in order to keep your Netflix account and there are now two parts to Netflix.
It is a little bit immediate. All of a sudden Netflix raised their prices without any warning. The news that is happening now is that they are apologizing for the immediate raise in prices and the change.
This story does have conflict. There is conflict between the people using Netflix and Netflix. Now that Netflix has made changes, the consumers have not been satisfied and are changing their minds about the whole Netflix business and what they are doing.
There are a lot of emotions. The people buying DVD's are upset and angry because they were not aare of this change and it is costing them more money to use it.

FOG Index
“Convenience, convenience, convenience.” That’s the appeal of an on-campus job, and that’s he main reason why students came to the job faire, said the Human Resource Manager Mary Lewis.
The job fair, which took place on Wednesday, August 24 in the Art Quad, offered many on-campus job opportunities for students. The options varied from full-time jobs to part-time jobs and from active jobs to not so active jobs.
The job fair was a great opportunity for all students because “these jobs are safe, they are convenient and they offer on-the-job training,” explained Lisa Thomas, director of human resources.
All of the jobs available will help students meet other San Jose State University students as well as make money. Jobs start at $9 an hour and can range up to $14 an hour, depending on the type of job.
That was the excerpt of one of my own writings.
When I calculated my FOG using part of this paper, I got FOG of 12.
I think that this fits me. I normally do tend to write long sentences with commas in them. I also like to use big words, which is not good for newspaper writing. I do not think that 12 is too bad of a number to get, although it is recommended to get around a 7 or 8. It is easy to read something that is a little smaller, but I guess I tend to elaborate and stretch things out. Shortening up sentences could be good and I should work on getting my FOG down.

Top News #2
The top news story that I picked to discuss is the story about the Paul Ray Castillo, the man who stole a car, shot a man and killed a women in San Jose this weekend. The specific story that I read said that he was caught on Sunday. http://www.mercurynews.com/crime-courts/ci_18924391?nclick_check=1
This story does have impact for the people that live in or around San Jose.
This is also news worthy because it is recent. It happened on Friday and the chase for him has been going on all weekend. Luckily they found him today.
There is proximity. The man was all over San Jose, therefore it concerns us and all the residents in San Jose.
There is a lot of emotions in this story. He did a lot of violent actions towards strangers and he frightened people living in San Jose. There was also sad emotions because a women died because of this man going on a violent rampage.

Got What It Takes To Be A Reporter?
After taking the quiz on page 31, I found out a few interesting things.
One thing is that I do not think I would make a very good reporter. After adding up my score, I ended up with a score of 19. In the text, it says if you score under 20 points then "... there's a strong possibility you won't be happy working in a newsroom." My goal is not to become a reporter so I am fine with that, but I thought i might have scored a little bit higher.
Another thing is that looking back at what I marked, I noticed that most of the big questions worth 3 points I checked the opposite, scoring no points. I feel that since they were so many points that they were important in becoming a reporter.
I could have swayed a little bit in order to gain one more point and have the outcome say, "reporting if a good fit for you" but I wanted to see what I truly would have gotten and that is what I stuck with.
I do like to write and being creative, which I checked off and got points for and I also feel that I am organized in my own way. I do think that when it comes to grammar and spelling I do fairly well at it, but I do not think I will be heading to a newsroom anytime soon.

Reason for taking the class
I am in Journalism 61 because it is a requirement for my major, which is Public Relations. I am also in this class because I am interested in finding out how to write for different types of news, such as paper and broadcast. This class will be helpful because it will teach me how to find a story. I will need to know how to make a lead in a story and keep the reader interested in the story. There are many ways to writing a news story and I want to find the many ways you can write and be intriguing at the same time.
