Top News #1
The story that I picked that is top news is about Netflix. Netflix decided to split the company into mailing DVD's as one company, Qwikster, and streaming videos as another company, Netflix. By doing this split, it caused many people to cancel their memberships with Netflix because the prices went up, there will be two separate company's which means two separate bills, and it is more complicated.
The company did not do a very good job describing why the charges are more and how it will be good for the consumers. Their communication skills did not satisfy the ones who made Netflix so big and that is why there is controversy and Netflix's number are falling dramatically.
What makes it newsworthy?
This story does have an impact. It will impact every person who is a member of Netflix because there will be an increase in price in order to keep your Netflix account and there are now two parts to Netflix.
It is a little bit immediate. All of a sudden Netflix raised their prices without any warning. The news that is happening now is that they are apologizing for the immediate raise in prices and the change.
This story does have conflict. There is conflict between the people using Netflix and Netflix. Now that Netflix has made changes, the consumers have not been satisfied and are changing their minds about the whole Netflix business and what they are doing.
There are a lot of emotions. The people buying DVD's are upset and angry because they were not aare of this change and it is costing them more money to use it.

FOG Index
“Convenience, convenience, convenience.” That’s the appeal of an on-campus job, and that’s he main reason why students came to the job faire, said the Human Resource Manager Mary Lewis.
The job fair, which took place on Wednesday, August 24 in the Art Quad, offered many on-campus job opportunities for students. The options varied from full-time jobs to part-time jobs and from active jobs to not so active jobs.
The job fair was a great opportunity for all students because “these jobs are safe, they are convenient and they offer on-the-job training,” explained Lisa Thomas, director of human resources.
All of the jobs available will help students meet other San Jose State University students as well as make money. Jobs start at $9 an hour and can range up to $14 an hour, depending on the type of job.
That was the excerpt of one of my own writings.
When I calculated my FOG using part of this paper, I got FOG of 12.
I think that this fits me. I normally do tend to write long sentences with commas in them. I also like to use big words, which is not good for newspaper writing. I do not think that 12 is too bad of a number to get, although it is recommended to get around a 7 or 8. It is easy to read something that is a little smaller, but I guess I tend to elaborate and stretch things out. Shortening up sentences could be good and I should work on getting my FOG down.

Top News #2
The top news story that I picked to discuss is the story about the Paul Ray Castillo, the man who stole a car, shot a man and killed a women in San Jose this weekend. The specific story that I read said that he was caught on Sunday. http://www.mercurynews.com/crime-courts/ci_18924391?nclick_check=1
This story does have impact for the people that live in or around San Jose.
This is also news worthy because it is recent. It happened on Friday and the chase for him has been going on all weekend. Luckily they found him today.
There is proximity. The man was all over San Jose, therefore it concerns us and all the residents in San Jose.
There is a lot of emotions in this story. He did a lot of violent actions towards strangers and he frightened people living in San Jose. There was also sad emotions because a women died because of this man going on a violent rampage.

Got What It Takes To Be A Reporter?
After taking the quiz on page 31, I found out a few interesting things.
One thing is that I do not think I would make a very good reporter. After adding up my score, I ended up with a score of 19. In the text, it says if you score under 20 points then "... there's a strong possibility you won't be happy working in a newsroom." My goal is not to become a reporter so I am fine with that, but I thought i might have scored a little bit higher.
Another thing is that looking back at what I marked, I noticed that most of the big questions worth 3 points I checked the opposite, scoring no points. I feel that since they were so many points that they were important in becoming a reporter.
I could have swayed a little bit in order to gain one more point and have the outcome say, "reporting if a good fit for you" but I wanted to see what I truly would have gotten and that is what I stuck with.
I do like to write and being creative, which I checked off and got points for and I also feel that I am organized in my own way. I do think that when it comes to grammar and spelling I do fairly well at it, but I do not think I will be heading to a newsroom anytime soon.

Reason for taking the class
I am in Journalism 61 because it is a requirement for my major, which is Public Relations. I am also in this class because I am interested in finding out how to write for different types of news, such as paper and broadcast. This class will be helpful because it will teach me how to find a story. I will need to know how to make a lead in a story and keep the reader interested in the story. There are many ways to writing a news story and I want to find the many ways you can write and be intriguing at the same time.
